Depression

Do you ever wake up in the morning wondering where your motivation and hope for tomorrow disappeared to? All of us, from time to time, experience the ‘blues’ but an unremitting sense of sadness and feeling low may indicate that you are struggling with depression. When depression is part of a person’s life, they usually have five or more of the following:

  • A down mood most of the day, nearly every day, that is often worse in the morning
  • A noticeably decreased interest in things that used to be pleasurable most of the time, as noticed by yourself or observed by those around you
  • Noticeable weight loss or weight gain although you are not trying to either lose or gain weight
  • Either having trouble sleeping or sleeping all the time
  • Feeling really tired almost all the time
  • A sense of worthlessness
  • Find it hard to think clearly and focus nearly all the time
  • Recurrent thoughts that suicide might be an answer

Depression is a difficult thing, especially as when a person is depressed it is almost impossible to remember feeling differently. It is often referred to as a dark place and frequently this is often an apt description. However, it is possible to feel better. It is important to work with someone who gets you and can help you address those dark thoughts, remind you that life can be different and help you put in place strategies that are do-able and tailor-made.
